Water in modern times is seen as a resource and has become a commodity that is used to gain financial and political power. However, in many traditional societies, water and water bodies are seen as sacred and are deeply embedded in their cultural fabrics. Many often associate them as having spiritual and living attributes, which has resulted in the various water spirits and deities found in myths and folklore worldwide. Australia being the driest inhabited continent in the world, water plays a vital role in the functioning of society. Despite this, we are considered water rich with many countries looking to us as an example of how to source and conserve water. The Water Embassy aims to create a space where people can reconnect with the spiritual side of water in to order to value it with a deeper appreciation.
