‘Lockout laws’ were introduced to Sydney as an attempt to provide greater safety of the public and patrons of inner city entertainment venues. However, these laws, although introduced with good intentions, have significantly impacted the city’s iconic entertainment culture and associated businesses. Barangaroo Festival is designed as an integrated development incorporating a series of live music venues, bars, clubs, local market stalls and eateries. The intention of Barangaroo Festival is to provide an alternative city area outside of the affected ‘lockout laws’ that will allow the continuation of entertainment venues and reinvigoration of Sydney’s late night venues, while also providing other facilities that will be utilised both day and night. The combination of music venues, open spaces and market places will ensure a fun and vibrant place that aims to attract a diverse range of people of different age groups and cultures. The Barangaroo Festival design is both consistent with, and will enhance the overall Barangaroo precinct concept.
